So, I am (finally) making good on my decision to upgrade my gun's performance, and my first step with this is a new barrel. Now, I've heard both pros and cons to each type of tightbore. 6.01s are obviously more expensive, and get better performance increases. One big concern I have with them is that I've heard they can get finicky (read- horrendous and break-inducing) on full-auto. Also, for my price range, I'm probably looking at a Madbull. Are these adequate, in terms of reliability? I know they don't compare to a PDI, but they are "good enough", right? One last consideration I have, is that my current barrel length is 300mm. Would I get any real performance increases by getting a longer barrel and a suppressor extension? I guess it boils down to, what's the best performance increase I can get, with the fewest risks, for $40-$60?
/Also, where would the best place to get one be? I want to stay away from AirsoftGI and Evike, and all the Chinese retailers due to shipping costs.

We carry Madbull barrels at the Army Navy store; all different lengths in 6.01 and 6.03. I've never had a problem with them, and they are very nice quality. I needed a barrel in a pinch for my G-Spec and so I used one of them, and I actually like it so much I don't plan on changing it any time soon.
A lot of the issues you'll hear about come from the quality of the BB's, not the barrel. I know people that use a 6.01 and run full auto all day long with no problem, and it's because they are running high end BB's through their gun. To be safe, you might want to stick with a 6.03. It's all your call in the end.

Thanks Drew, by "high-quality" will the PL field BBs work? Also, I will probably drop by the store on Saturday afternoon to pick one up with Rob. For a 6.01, how much will it be? I know AirsoftSmith has them in other lengths for about $40.

If you want to get a 6.01, and you plan on getting one longer than your stock barrel, be warned that your FPS might drop because there wouldn't be enough air compressed in the cylinder to push the BB all the way down the barrel.
This can create a sort of "vacuum-effect", which can impact the velocity of the BB. If you want to get a significantly longer TBB, you might want to also consider a bore-up kit. Otherwise, I'd recommend just sticking with a 300mm barrel

Generally that wouldn't be an issue unless you increase the barrel to at least 455mm

I didn't know at what length the vacuum effect would start being an issue. I just wanted him to be aware there was the possibilty of a small FPS drop as a result of a significantly longer TBB. I was about to say "try and get away with a 363 if you want a longer barrel", but figured that would have a terrible loss of FPS.
Thanks for pointing that out though; learn something new everyday.
the "quality bbs" thing is very important....especially with a 6.01 barrel....don't use Dick's or WalMart bbs.....
I recommend in order of goodness:
Excels
G&Gs
KSCs
AEs
although I usually have no problem with TSDs, I will say for the first time in two years I did this past Sunday....they wouldn't feed smoothly, and sometimes not all, and sometimes would double feed in my Marui M4 with Promy bucking and Systema tightbore....but I put in some G&G .25 bios, and it ran smooth as silk and the bbs spread was noticeably tighter....

Alright, so right now I'm looking at a 6.01mm 300mm-length Madbull barrel. As I understand it, I should be safe using the Army/Navy and field BBs. Thanks, all.

Go with the 6.01mm Madbull, it's what I have Jose. You've seen my baby, it fires great. Expect a decent FPS increase, I was at 385 before I broke in the spring.

I never understood why PDI is so much better anyway. I mean 6.01mm is 6.01 mm whether it is expensive steel or...whatever Madbull barrels are, I can never figure it out, it's like a fiberglassly metal or something, anybody know?

Come to think of it, I probably ought to figure out how to strip her down anyway. Maybe now I can spend my time obsessively cleaning my gun and muttering. Victor, did you ever take her apart?

On a serious note, how the hell do you strip a 416?

Aluminum is more prone to bending and getting dented during shipping. Trust me, my first madbull barrel got dented during shipping. Also aluminum is more prone to scratching, particles of dirt can easily find their way into your barrel during outdoor games. My madbull barrel is nice, but it just doesn't compare to PDI or Prommy.
