CA M4 Feeds but doesn't fire

After opening up my gearbox to install the anti-reversal I had some serious issues trying to close it again. When I finally figured out how to get it closed I tried to fire it and now it doesn't work.

It feeds the bbs but it only shoots them like a foot out of the barrel. Can somebody help me with this problem? Please

Thank you.

Oh and it makes a loud clacking sound when it is fired, like plastic is hitting metal.

Since this issue corresponds with your disassembly of the mechbox, I'm going out on a limb and guessing that you put it together wrong.
You've got something awry.
Disassemble it again, and watch the mechbox V2 mechbox disassembly/reassembly video while putting it back together. You should never have to force anything together during reassembly. Although there are a bunch of things that can move or become dislodged, the reassembly is not terribly difficult. Did you make sure all of the shims on each side of each gear got back exactly where they came from?
Did you make sure your nozzle is slid into the slot in the tappet plate, and is not in front of or behind it?

Won't fit into the body anymore? How does disassembly/reassembly change the outside dimensions of the mechbox? Yikes!

I watched the video and have dis and reassembled it several times now. Every time I have done so it fits back in to the frame differently. The last time I assembled it is slid right in without a problem but now it won't fit.

It did this one or two times before too.

I think it has something with where the gears stick through the frame of the gearbox. They keep hitting my selector switch and not allowing the gearbox to fit back in. In any case, it is a real pain, I'm having enough trouble getting it to work and it's taking me five times as long now just to slip the gearbox into the frame.

Anyway. I'll try everything you suggested and let you know how it goes.

Thanks,
Ben

Well no matter what I do it seems like the gearbox will NOT fit in. I've disassembled it two times again to see if I could change anything to make it fit. Everything looks just as it should but it still doesn't fit in so I can't even test to see if it works.

You literally posted that you would try everything and then in the same minute edited that post saying it still won't fit. I recommend spending more than a few seconds attempting to fix it before you give up .

Just take it to a local airsmith if you can locate one near you, or ship it off to some place that does repairs.

Same minute? Haha, no that was a double post that got joined with the other one, I just posted within the time limit for a double-post auto edit. :P I'd done most of it already....anyways I've tried it now if I hadn't then and still nothing.

I've been working on this for like six hours; I'm done. I'll take your advice and just try to find somebody else who can fix this for me.

Sorry if I sound a little angry; I've worked on it for around six hours now without any progress. All I've done is break more. :P

Thanks for your help guys.

Well as far as your gun only shooting a few feet did you put the cylinder in backwards? The ported part should be in the back. If its in the front you'll lose a crap load of compression.

Oh man, you might have just saved me from going out and buying a whole new bore-up. I'll check and see if that works.

After a long discussion with some members of another board I solved all of the problems but that. I will try and fix that now.

Thanks,
Ben

I went and opened up the gearbox again, switched the cylinder around, and tried firing again only to receive the same results...most of the time. When I opened the gun up the valve and the cylinder appeared to have been glued at some point and were dislodged from one another. I'll put some silicone in it tomorrow and see if that solves the problem.

Thank you again, everybody, for your help. You've probably saved me about $30 to get this repaired or $60 to get it replaced.

Ok well im guessing that you checked the piston and air nozzle because if they're damaged it can cause problems. Next thing i would check is to see if the air nozzle is sealing properly with the hop-up unit, if there is to much space in between it can cause your shots to drop. You also may want to try using a different mag. I had a high cap that caused one of every couple of shots to shoot only a few feet in my mp5, i switched to mids and the problem was solved.

Did you make sure the piston head was compressing air into the cylinder? There's a very simple way to test this, Just put your finger of the cylinder head's nozle, and push the piston forward. Once you get past the port, the piston should start resisting, and bouncing back as you try to push it farther. If this isn't happening, you have a bad air seal between the piston head a cylinder.

If this is the case, apply a thin layer of silicone gel (or White Lithium Grease) to the inside of the cylinder, and around the piston head. You might also want to put some right along the border where the cylinder head is connected to the cylinder, and a bit on the outside of the cylinder head's nozzle.

If you do this all right, it should definitely help form a good air seal. If it doesn't, then I think your best bet would be to bring it to someone with more experience, I.E. Mav or Old Man. They'll be able to get it up and running quickly and reliably.

*Edit: If I'm wrong in any of this, please someone let me know. I've just started dwelving into the world of gearboxes, and am pretty much self-teaching as I go.

I'm going to be buying a new gearbox and then just working on this one on the side.

I'm tired of dealing with it and I don't feel like sending it in for repair just yet. I can learn how to fix it if I ever come upon a problem with a gearbox again.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I opened up the gearbox again and found out that the piston head was cracked and broken apart where it screws in to the piston. I bought a new piston made of aluminum online along with a new cylinder head. Hopefully that will solve all of the problems with it.

I checked to see if my piston head would do what you described if I covered the cylinder head and it doesn't do that at all, it just slides right in to the cylinder...then again my piston broke when I opened it just now...a possible sign that it was what was broken all along maybe?

Also, I've gotten about five people who have offered to fix the item for me who are right here in California. One said he had four years of experience fixing gearboxes. :)

If the piston head was cracked, that is most likely the problem. Any air compressed could be escaping through that crack, and that means there's no air to propel the BB.

The Aluminum piston will definitely be durbale, but be warned, your ROF is going to go down dramatically if your motor has to work to pull back that extra weight. My recommendation is either a polycarb piston (I hear G&P white pistons are nice), or a torque motor. Though if you get a torque motor, you might have to up the gears too, and possibly even the battery.

All in all, I suppose try it with the aluminum piston, and if you're not happy with the ROF or if the gun is having trouble, switch over to a nice, light polycarb. It's probably the cheaper route all considering.

As for your offers to fix the gearbox, that's great! Personally, I'd go with the person with the most experience, but that's just me.

Best of luck on getting your gearbox fixed up!

/Edit: You bought a new piston head too correct? Or did it come with the Piston/Cylinder Head?

Or you could always try the....(dramatic pause)....SWISS CHEESE MOD! That'll reduce the weight, no guarantee on durability though

you really need to let a professional look at this....I've had so many of these thru the store lately....usually taking me just an hour or so to straighten them out....

I'm finding that when people do their own work, more than two things are wrong/missing when I open them up.....

I should have done that to begin with, but now I'm out 50 dollars on another gearbox that isn't even working and a huge amount of cash on a new gun. I'll try and get it repaired professionally once I've got the cash, but that will be a while...a very long while.

I just realized that the shimming is bad on it too.

Until then, how much do you charge?

Thank you,
Ben
