FAL Masterkey

I decided i wanted to mount a shotgun on my FAL. Before someone asks, yes, modern warfare 2 kinda inspired me. As Lou would say, i'm living out my masturbatory video game fantasies, hehe.

First thing i did was mount a rail on the handguard of my FAL. I used a universal shotgun weaver mount i bought on ebay for 7 bucks. The bottom was concave a bit, and fit the round handguard quite well. Rather than screwing the bolts right into plastic i made a couple metal tabs out of sheet metal and bent them to fit inside the handguard, then i welded nuts to them. Then i got a 24 dollar UTG shotgun with RIS. I took off the pistol grip, which contained a heavy metal weight and cut off everything after the receiver, which was just sort of a plastic box the grip mounted on. I made a metal plate to go over the back of the receiver and epoxied that on. I also removed a piece of bar stock they put in the magazine tube to give the gun more weight. Then i needed some way to mount two rails back to back. So, i stole the channeled mounting rails off two m4 riser mounts, and took the tightening screws and knobs as well. Then i mounted them together and done. All in all it took maybe 2 or 3 hours to complete, fabricating the metal pieces taking the most of the time.

The mounting turned out rock solid but the handguard itself has some play in it on the gun, gonna have to fix that. I mounted it forward enough that i can just rock my magazines in and out. The shotgun doesn't add much weight to the gun, it doesn't weight much more than a cheap springer pistol with those weights removed. I was actually impressed with the range and accuracy of the cheap shotgun. It chronoed about 280-285. Maybe someday i'll replace it with a nice maruzen or something less cheap plastic looking. Usefulness is doubtful, but i think it looks pretty bad-ass.

haha! Well you'll be glad to know i didn't give more than 2 seconds consideration to the option of a RIS front end kit. ugh-lee. The only permanent modifications are 4 tiny little holes in the bottom of the handguard.

Now if only someone made a Rem 870 with a multi-shot burst it could actually have a practical purpose.

Yo saw, I can't exactly figure out how you did this, and I'm trying to figure it out so I could see if I could do it with my M4 without buying the overpriced masterkey kit. Could you describe this step a little more in depth. The way I see it I would put a rail on the bottom of my M4, but I get confused after that.

I love it. It's a lot less tacticool than I expected, and it looks pretty convenient.

My first idea was to use one of that m4 masterkey kit. But i didn't wanna butcher the gun trying to make it fit, or spend a fortune on that kit, and a maruzen ca870.

What i did was really simple. I took two m4 riser mounts. One i had lying around for years, i bought another one, you can get them for like 10 dollars. I twisted the knobs off with a pair of pliers. Then i knocked the pins out of one with a piece of wood, as to not damage the threads. Then i took the two dovetailed rail peices, the ones that actually clamp down on whatever rail your mounting on. Put the bolts through, and put the knobs on. And there you have a perfect clamp for mounting two rails back to back.

I can't really show you how i chopped the shotgun, because i already threw away the pieces i cut off, and blocked the back of the receiver off with a plate. But if you really wanna do it, I can help you out one way or another.
