Ghillie Cleaning

Hey guys, I was just wondering if there was any good way to get the twigs and crap stuck in my ghillie suit out. It leaves a mess all over my house whenever i get it out and I need to fix that. I've tried combing it out but it doesn't work and I was going to throw it into the washing machine. I don't know

the who;e point of a ghillie suit is to have twigs and crap stuck in it so you look like the natural environment. If it is a problem in your house you could just put it in a garbage bag or something until you need it. Otherwise I do not know how exactly to get the stuff out. I wouldn't suggest putting it in the washing it would probably not work and the twigs may be able to somehow break your washer.

Did you make it or is it store bought? Either way, the simplest thing to do is go through it and pick everything out. I wouldn't put it through the wash. If mine ever got terribly muddy I'd get some water and scrub that specific part [make sure your dye is waterproof first].

In my opinion dont clean it at all. The reason being the more crap you get stuck in it the more it will look like the enviornment. Unless you rolled around in dog poop then i would sudgest cleaning it

The problem is that all that stuff caught in your ghillie will start to deteriorate and make the suit smell..... distinct. If it's a store-bought one, get some "Shoe-goo" or "Amazing Goop" and put a dab on all the knots before you go trying to comb it or pull all the sticks out, or else you'll just end up with a balding ghillie suit. For a full suit, the goop method takes a few hours, it's something you could get done over 2 nights pretty easily.

I usually just pull all the big debris out by hand, then hang it up outside and smack it with things to get all the dust, dirt, and leaves out of it.

The garbage bag idea worked for me during the short time i had mine. I would recommend picking out any unwanted leaves and twigs by hand. This will put it at the least risk of coming apart.

DO NOT WASH! under any circumstances. The fibers can tear off individually, get sucked into the drain of your washer and cause major problems there. Or worse yet they can get stuck in the metal bearings that spin the drum and/or agitator and cause mechanical failure of the washing machine.

When your suit is "distinct" (that's a great way to describe it) I have found that the best way to clean it up is to hang it out on a line and hose it down, Pick most of the dead veg and twigs out and let it drip completely dry. Otherwise is will mildew, even if it is treated to resist this. It is also a pretty good idea to reapply a spray on fire retardant and mildew resistant to extend the life of the suit over all and your safety. I second the shoe goo on the knots. Keep your Ghillie in a clean dry location out of sun light, I use a large duffel bag the holds all of my suits, this is not ideal but it does work.
