I just bought a UTG MP5 and the safety switch only partially works. If you put the gun on safe it shoots semi and sometimes auto. The semi aouto and auto settings work just fine. If you put a little pressure down on the selector when it's on safe it works. The trigger does become impeaded in the safe position. I assume I need to crack the gear box, but does anyone have an idea where I should start to correct this problem?
for $100, don't bother, just practice good firearm safety: Don't touch the trigger until you're ready to destroy what's on the other end of the barrel.

K... I'd just like to get a little more range out of the beast though. I do realize I'm not looking at a pin gun though. Would a hop up change or tight bore barrel possibly make a difference?
barrel would, but not on your range, but rather your accuracy (it's still only a 2 in barrel)
As for Hop up, nope, won't affect much. MAY increase a little bit of accuracy, but again, not good for range. Seriously, the UTG MP5's fulfill their role in life: Short Range CQB weapon.

just my personal opinion, but i dont think i would go spending alot of money to upgrade a $100 gun, it is what it is. And most likely you are probably just gonna be using it as a lender to friends or to rent out, if im not mistaken, so i would probably just leave it as is.
i also am a bit OCD and would want to fix the problem too, so if you think you can do so without disrupting anything else in the gun go for it, or maybe you wanna return it for a new one that does work properly, less risk on your part.
Yeah, lender gun is the primary idea here. I figure it allows me to horde my good gear all to myself. One can never have enough M4's. Other than the gear box which I plan on cracking over the Christmas Holiday when I have the time anyways, I'm just looking for quick drop in upgrade. Accuracy isn't a big priority so I'll jest leave well enough alone then. Hey it's a sub gun, and I'm not looking for a lot more than that out of the thing. I did see off Arnies airsoft where someone massively upgraded one and spent almost as much as one would to by a TM which is definitly not in my plans. I have a tinker mentality too though along w/ my OCD which is why I didn't send it back. Besides, from what I've read across the net it's apparently a fifty fifty crap shoot whether you get problems related to the selector switch or not. Would the issue of the gun firing while on safe be a circutry related issue or a mechanical one?
could be both. First, if you CAN pull the trigger, your first issue is mechanical. HOWEVER, even if the mechanical part fails, there's also an electrical safety if you COULD pull the trigger. Really, you'd have to pull the mechbox out of the AEG to find out. You more often than not don't have to open the mechbox to fix this.

there are a thousand and one reasons to upgrade your utg both for and against. IMHO consider this:
1. true you may very well spend as much as buying a brand new STOCK TM but for the money you got an upgraded gun. as an excercise i costed out upgrading the mechbox. i shopped for a hurricane upgrade kit, systema polycarb piston and systema m4 barrel and i came out with $101 (on airsoft atlanta's site). I havent bought it yet but it showed me the possibilities. Throw in AWG wires and deans connectors as recomended by staticzero on arnies and you still come out ahead.
Im not factoring in durability here (who knows how long the mechbox will last with these upgrades), i'm just pointing out you can very well do it and still come out ahead - that or at least spare parts for your next gun in case the utg bites the dust.
2. admit it - youve been wanting to see a nekkid mechbox since you were able to play with yourself and your friends...you have a collection of high end TMs I would presume - perish the thought of you ever screwing around with a $300 'toy' mechbox! The utg is like your first time shell let you open her up and stick things inside her without the mental baggage (am i being too graphic here ;) )
3. lastly - killing a deer who stood frozen from your car's headlight beams is not called hunting - its called roadkill. Thats why shooting your friends with your 100000 fps m4 from 10 miles away isnt too sporting....wait...neh that IS sporting.
In parting I like staticzero's philosophy in upgrading the utg - dont fix if it aint broke.
