A while back, an user, jballou, from ASP created an amusing running list of "truths" and "do and don't" with some help of other airsoft players that bears resurrection, especially due to recent times in Texas airsoft. It is copied and pasted below since the original link is now lost in the Internet black hole.
While this is 3 years or so old now, many points are worth thinking about while others are dated. Items in bold are especially relevant.
Read and take some of the points to heart:
************************************************** * The Laws Of Airsoft
This is where I will keep my laws. It started with had 4 that have served me well, and with other people's submissions and time, it has grown. Pet Peeves and Murphy's Laws submitted by icruztn, big thanks.
If it's your first AEG, get a TM.
If you don't get a TM, when it breaks (and it will) we will laugh at you, and hope you will cry. Also, someone may offer $80 for the heap of your busted gun you paid $300 for. It's about as good as you're gonna get.
If you have to ask if it can be done (custom guns especially), you do not have the skill to do it
Do not ask for advice, then do what you wanted to do in the first place.
If you're just starting airsoft, and want to be a sniper, use someone else's rifle for a bit. If you get a sniper rifle as a first gun, it limits what you can play. Get an AEG!
If you do not have time to shim it right, you will find time to shim it again, and replace the gears and piston.
If you are right, and someone continues to insist you are wrong, let the issue die. We all know you are right, and the other person's spouse is most likely having sex with the telephone repairman on the sly.
If you are in an argument, and the other person's profession is the subject of the argument, you are wrong by default. Unless your job is also about the subject matter, in which case nobody else has a ****ing idea what you are talking about, so take it offline.
If you have any post with the phrase "WHAT IS the BEST GUN??!!!111" or any of it's permutations, commit suicide immediately, if not sooner.
If a game consists of two kids playing in the woods, it is NOT a "skirmish"!
Airsoft is NOT realistic. You show me a kid who gets his legs blown off from playing airsoft, properly executed air strikes and artillery, and we'll start talking about realism. Until then, you're a couple dudes in the woods shooting plastic BBs at each other from fake guns. If you want realism, join the ****ing army.
You play airsoft, you are not special, elite, or deserve any special recognition no matter how cool you think you are. That kid with the springer is every bit as cool as you when he hits you. Don't cry if people don't bow down to your skillz, yo, because it really doesn't matter unless you need it to rock yourself to sleep at night.
If you do not know how it goes together, have no diagram to put it back together, and have no access to someone who can put it together if you can't - DO NOT TAKE IT APART.
An M4 with a flashlight is NOT custom. An M4 with a boatload of crap bolted on, with a aftermarket RIS kit and different stock, it is NOT custom. Custom means "Made for this project" or "Not commercially available".
It's a game. You do not get anything by winning. Trash talking and name calling has no place in this game. Those who engage in it are petty, unpopular, and their mothers wish they had chose abortion, so let it go.
If you hit me, and I commend you on your skill and/or marksmanship, saying something smart like "Yeah, I kicked your ass" or anything else is a sure way to show your sportsmanship. If someone shoots you, and it's a hard or near impossible shot, it's nice to compliment people on it. If someone does it to you, be cool, and either thank them or say nothing at all. Again, trash talking is a huge bother.
"Winning" and then talking trash about the other side helps show how professional you really are. Really.
Hitting someone doesn't mean you "kicked their ass" when their side achieved the objective and you didn't.
If there is "no way you missed that guy", one of three things has happened: Either he didn't feel it, and it's an honest mistake; he is cheating and will get his comeuppance in the order of a full hicap to the head next time he gets hit; or you missed. Almost unilaterally it's number one or three.
Those without backup guns will find a problem with their gun that can't be fixed field expedient when they're 20 miles from nowhere on the first day of a weekend op.
The guy with $2,000+ invested in gear and guns will, at some point, get eliminated by a guy with his springer.
The team that acts leet only impresses newbs
A standard magazine is not an accessory or an upgrade for your weapon
Just because you have a classic airsoft gun doesn't mean you are an airsoft guru.
You are but one player. Many players make up airsoft. You will not be missed and airsoft will not cease to exist if you disappear.
Pet Peeves:
Players who don't wear webgear:
- because they say they can't afford it. they spent 300+ on a gun, but can't buy $80 worth of BDU's and gear.
- because they say they don't need it. *How* can it be milsim if you're not carrying all the stuff you could possibly need to get you through a game?
Anyone who counts springers as part of their airsoft gun "inventory"
Random emails from people asking me to sell them batteries/chargers/magazines/springers when I didn't have an ad up for any of those.
People who post what they've "heard" about an airsoft related question. Especially when they can't give a source and don't have any actual experience
People who cite ASR as a reference.
Unrealistic modifications to guns (ie, P90's with M203's, MP5 "sniper" carbines, etc.)
Bigass hunting scopes on assault weapons. They look gay, y'all. Admit it.
Any use of the term "leet" (or it's leet-speak version) to describe a team or gun.
People who have an opinion on *everything*...and they want to share it with the entire forum
People who think $400 is a lot of money to drop on one gun.
People who think that since they've spent a "ton" of money on a gun that:
- it makes them a better person than the average player
- it makes them a better player than the guy with a stock/near-stock gun
- the gun should be indestructible, or immune to stoppages
In that same vein: people who think that because they've blown a lot of money on airsoft that they're due a certain amount of respect or deference from others. Funk dat. Your wallet does not make you a respectable person.
People who refuse to READ...then COMMENT
Teams and people who think their airsoft team is better than any other, that toy gun screams badass.
People who feel the need to add posts saying "Yeah, that's a good idea" or "what he said is right" or otherwise confirming an already confirmed factoid.
Newbies. In general.
Baseball hats, t-shirts, sneakers or other civilian clothing on the game field
People with radios with no radio discipline. Myself included.
Any "support weapon" with a magazine capacity less than 600 rounds. Clamping mags together does not count.
People who have to tell you in excruciating detail how they saw you and shot you, in order to get some sort of recognition or something. Yeah, I was there, I know how I got hit as a result. Congrats on your "kill", it was a nice shot. Now move on, you are still someone playing with a toy BB gun and your side ended up losing the objective because you were off playing ninja.
People who think they're snipers just because they have an upgraded gun with a scope.
Newbs who tell anyone who will listen how much they love their CA or ICS guns and argue with experienced players about how their metal bodies rule, but NEVER post when they have a problem or can objectively list the strenths or weaknesses of the gun. Of course, they never mention how they sell the gun shortly thereafter in order to buy a TM gun.
People who get mad at me because I can't fix their 2 no-name gas M11's that they bought at a sportsman show from some hick (that I told them not to buy!!!)
Players who list what guns they have in their forum signature. Usually it isnt impressive.
On the forums, people who insist on asking if buying "x" gun is a good gun, after they've purchased it.
The 13 year old boys shooting each other with springers in their front yard wearing no eye protection whatsoever.
The same 13 year old who play in their front yard who say they have a "Team" with names like "SW4T" "Leet Ownage"
The ******* who always wants to charge the enemy after waiting 15 minutes. After you tell him to wait he does it anyways.
People who never played airsoft in their life, that come to an airsoft forum to piss airsofters off.
People who decide "hosting" an "op" is a good idea.....when they just started playing 3 months ago.
The leeches who bitch about every little thing, from skirmishes to event dates to scenarios to rules to what the teams area......but have never lifted a finger to volunteer to do anything. Obviously just easier in their all-important busy lives to criticize the people that do volunteer.
Again, those leeches who gladly want your help but then are just as glad to talk **** behind your back.
Murphy's Laws of Airsoft
Your enemy can see your BBs too.
Your enemies hicaps are just as big as yours.
The guy who spends the most money on his gun won't win every game.
The guy with the springer will kill you.
Your battery will fail just when you've decided to rush the enemy position.
Your hicap will unwind (telling everyone around you that you're empty) right when you need ammo the most.
That guy you just got an easy kill on was on your side.
It always seems like the other side is cheating.
The pistol that's performed reliably at home for months will jam when you draw it in the field.
Your scope lens will not only draw fire, but is a remarkably ineffective BB shield.
The bad guys are coming up on the side that "they couldn't possibly" be coming from.
Your new "unbreakable" upgraded gun will break within an hour come skirmish time.
Just when you've got an open shot, your mag will run dry.
Your friends will be watching when you pull the most boneheaded move of the day, but not when you make the greatest move ever.
The guy with the Rambo complex will die early, and often.
The guy who dies the most isn't the guy who has the least amount of fun.
Good camo is priceless.
No matter how much gun safety is talked about, some idiot will sweep everyone or shoot in the staging area.
Your goggles will fog just when you think you see bad guys coming your way.
You'll never have smoke when you really need it.
That guy you snickered at with the MP5K before the game will shoot you. Twice.
That guy who "couldn't hit me from that far out" will.
My first AEG was an echo1. I think it's prety good but whatever.
Please read "Pet Peeve #13". I'll wait.
This was written 3 years ago. There were no Echo1s then. Also, nobody cares what AEG you have, as long as it shoots and you are happy with it.
If this thread turns into another "First AEG" whine-fest where everyone gets pissy because they disagree with the post and have to post, I'm locking it.
I realize that you're trying to contribute to the thread by saying you got a TM and it turned flop on you, but please keep two things in mind right now.
1) You just necroed a 4 month old thread with a one line, barely grammatically correct post.
2) The TM Sig 550 and Sig 551 were both removed from production for what was probably the exact reason yours broke, the electronic sensor that they used to create the 3 round burst was extremely unreliable, and they didn't want to release an unreliable product, so they sucked it up & said "Sorry, we screwed up!" In my eyes at least, this is the sign of a very good consumer-conscious company, and the kind of company that I want to buy from & continue doing business with.

Probably not. Echo-1s seem to be a great value for the money. Like I said in my earlier post (that I know you read, right), this was written before Echo-1s came out.
i laughed, but i also took it seriously. if someone has a better gun then you, they have no-life. if someone has a wal-mart gun, they are a noob. simple.
my law of airsoft.
by the way, mods, are you going to like, shun me because i said noob?

Reason: the word noob is offensive sometimes
i say the only good gun is the ones that don't break and goes to your liking. also its how you use the gun too. you can have the worst gun in the world and still get some good hits. you can have one of the best guns but you couldn't hit a single person.

if someone has a better gun then you, they have no-life.
It might just be me but I found that extremely offensive. Maybe they have a better gun because they like airsoft? Or because they worked on their gun? Just because someone has a better gun doesn't mean they have no life.
Im glad you said that andrew because i too took offense from that. I've seen people with guns way better than mine, i don't say that they have no life, i say that i'm happy to have them on my team, or even happy to have a chalange to fight them.

I personally don't give a rat's ass what kind of gun anyone brings to the field, and I feel sorry for you that you do. It's very petty and conceited of you to view yourself as the "gold standard" of what is acceptable for airsoft. If you need to put others down to be happy, I really do pity you.
I'm just as dead being shot by a clear springer as I am being shot by a PTW. The gun makes very little difference as long as the player is having fun. It is a ****ing game, after all.
And stop asking if the mods are going to "shun you". Protip: If you are concerned about possible ramifications from the mods/admins, you are doing it wrong.
i agree with everything that is being said. I see airsoft as a two part hobby.1) the modifications and tinkering that goes into makeing any gun(regardless of price) shoot at it highest potential. weather that means practicing or actually changing the gun to your likings.2)getting out onto the field and putting that gun to use and having fun.
It is a ****ing game, after all.
I couldnt have said it better myself!
Honestly, it was a phrase from some yo-yoing company. Sorry if i offended everyone. i really didnt read the post. sorry for being rude to anyone that i offended.

Under pet peeves just what do you call a newbie? An every one has to start at some point don't they? Not to be a prick but I really don't want an attitude because this is my first game of true tactical airsoft. As for the rest of it I agree if people do not know there stuff they should shut up and listen to those how do. An I think evey person needs to earn the right to stay they know there stuff. Thanks for the 411 on the rest being new at tactical airsoft it helped alot. Hope to learn more from the guys with real exp. I really do not want to come off as a prick. I am a adult and do not have time for kid stuff an hope you guys can show me the ropes. Thanks for all the work done on this site it really does payoff because Just about all my questions are being anwsered.
Welcome to the forum, Mark. Believe me, you'll learn more in the first 10 minutes of field play than you can possibly absorb on an internet forum.
See you at the field.
I know alittle from doing paintball an alot from doing ww2 reenactments for 5 years. So I know combat tactics but I am sure airsoft is alittle differnt then them.
You and the person that you dislike the most on the team will be stuck defending a position for 2-3 hours until you both get wacked.
When you sneak up undetected on a group of players on the other team, one of 7 things will happen:
1. Your battery will die after 3 shots.
2. If you put your gun on full-auto, it will stop working on full-auto until after you are out, and it will only work on semi. If you put it on semi, your gun will stop working altogether until after you are out.
3. Something will fall out of your vest and/or pocket, making a very loud noise.
4. You step on one of your teammates who is wearing a ghillie suit, which makes him yell in pain.
5. Someone on the other team you didn't see will safety kill or "knife" you from behind.
6. The radio you thought you turned down will start ringing. Very loudly.
7. You trip over some unseen object and crash epicly on to the ground.
All of which result in minimum causilities for the other side and you trudging in back to the respawn point PO'ed at yourself.
Murphy's Law: At the beginning of a fight, when they're all in the open and dead in your sights, your saftey will be on. No worries, *flip*. Oh, and you don't have a magazine in either.

Being a newbie to airsoft, I can only attribute that at the field it is not a fashion/freak show especially when your 140$ BDU's never have dirt on them? But they look "cool" Newbie peeve maybe? I want to see more intensity less single file attacking, create a skirmish line, communicate and achieve the objective. See you's on the field, PS I'm the guy yelling out their attacking positions. :)
