Real Sword Dragunov SVD
Someone wanted to see it, so here it is. The Real Sword Dragunov SVD. Pre-ordered it from evike, for $530.00. Where to start, well, Real Sword really goes all out when they make a replica. Its certainly the most authentic looking and feeling airsoft replica i've seen thus far. Put next to the real thing you'd have a hard time telling them apart from just looking at it. It weights almost ten pounds and is solid as a rock. Not a creak, nor a wobble to be found. I feel like i could bash in a door with this thing and maybe i could. The handmade woodwork is gorgeous and made from laminated plywood just like the real handguards. They're about a 1/4 inch thick and strong as hell. I wouldn't be suprised if much of the steel on this gun is made using a real SVD parts kit. If not, its been painstakingly reproduced. Forged, machined steel reciever, and i'm guessing barrel as well. The barrel itself is very thick and heavy and makes up a good chunk of the weight of the gun. I certainly won't be worried about dropping this beast.
Onto the guts. The gun uses a special gearbox designed solely for the SVD. It is semi-auto only. The gearbox has four gears for more torque. Supposedly, you can run it on a 7.2 volt with the stock M120 spring, and with an 8.4 it can pull just about any spring they make. It does use standard AEG springs, which is the only standard part i think it uses as far as the gearbox is concerned. Possibly the spring guide as well. They also include an extra set of gears, and a piston, which i noticed is about 3/8 of an inch longer than a standard piston. The cocking lever pulls back to reveal the hop up dial, which seems to have very tiny increments of adjustment in nice little clicks as your turn it. The hop chamber and all parts are made of metal, it uses a standard bucking and nub, and the barrel is 690mm. The magazine holds 96 rounds, and it snaps in relatively hard, with no play whatsoever.
How it performs. I've had it outside once so far, it was a little windy so i didn't get too involved. I don't have any optics yet but it was no problem hitting a soda can at about 100 feet. The wind had little effect even with .20s, pushing the BBs a few inches to one side. I was very impressed with the accuracy, it definately puts all my other guns to shame, but I'll do more detailed tests when i get a scope on it and on a nice day. The gearbox takes a little longer to cycle than your standard AEG. According to real sword these guns are supposed to shoot about 395fps. My little chrono gave me about 120MPS (just under 400fps) and its usually pretty accurate.
For once i actually feel like i paid a fair price for an airsoft gun. Considering all thats gone into the production of it, and the final result being what it is. Aside from putting a scope on it, i really don't feel it needs any sort of modification. Heres some pics. The gun is so long It was difficult to get the whole thing in the shot with my crappy little camera. That bipod isn't for the SVD by the way, just used it for picture purposes. You can see some much better quality photos on Real Sword's site. I'll try to take some better ones when i get the scope, and the correct bipod. That's about all i can think of for now. Feel free to ask me anything.
