Soldiers test integration of popular civilian game into pre-deployment training

This is an article from the Army's website. The title is pretty much explanitory of most of the article. I think this article is good for our sport, showing non-believers that it is not just for stupid kids to go and make trouble. Heres the link:http://http://www.army.mil/-news/200...science-title1

But I'll also Copy/Paste:

FORT JACKSON, S.C. -- What began as a popular form of civilian entertainment is being tested on Fort Jackson as a possible new way to train Soldiers preparing to head to a combat zone.

The 187th Ordnance Battalion is operating a pilot program designed to test the feasibility of using Airsoft weapons to train Soldiers to cope with real-world combat situations such as forward operating base operations and force protection.

Airsoft weapons are replicas of their military counterparts, but fire plastic pellets instead of bullets. Airsoft is widely used by civilians who enjoy organizing military simulations and historical reenactments.

Training cadre with the unit are finding that Airsoft is an ideal way to teach Soldiers valuable lessons about combat.

"It gives them more realistic, outcome-based training," said Sgt. 1st Class Richard Hunt, module chief for the battalion. "Now they know when they get hit during a training exercise."

The battalion has been using Airsoft weapons since the spring at its field training site where soldiers learn basic combat tactics in an urban environment. Like Hunt, all of the cadre at the FTX site are combat veterans. Hunt said the Airsoft weapons give the training another level of sophistication and realism that is hard to attain with other training tools such as the Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System, which has been in use for years.

Soldiers at the site practice reflexive fire and other tactical skills while armed with replica M-4s, M-9s and M-249s, the weapons they most likely will use in combat. While practicing tactical movements, such as clearing rooms or exiting a vehicle in an ambush, the Soldiers come under fire from Airsoft weapons. The feedback is instant if a Soldier makes a mistake.

"I got hit and it stung a little bit," Pvt. Joshua Kolometz said after undergoing reflexive fire training. "This gives you a realistic feel of what combat will be like."

That's exactly what the Airsoft training program is intended to impart, said Company B's 1st Sgt. Chris Arnold. "This has a huge impact on training realism," Arnold said. "If you make a mistake during training, you know you've made a mistake."

Maj. Benjamin Kratz, the battalion's executive officer, said data is being collected on Fort Jackson's Airsoft pilot program so that it can be determined if it should be implemented Army wide.

Kratz said initial data shows that Airsoft ammunition is much cheaper to use in training than the traditional blank ammunition used with MILES or equipping weapons with specially-designed bolts to fire paintball rounds. Kratz said one blank M-16 round costs as much as 32 Airsoft rounds. The Airsoft rounds used on Fort Jackson are biodegradable, which is a benefit over using traditional blank rounds.

"We go through a lot of blank rounds here on Fort Jackson," Kratz said. "What the data doesn't show yet is how long the Airsoft weapons last and how much the replacement parts and other ongoing costs are."

Kratz said the Airsoft training so far has accomplished what was intended.

"This is the last stop before Soldiers go to their gaining units downrange," he said. "What they learn here will save lives."

Cheaper than blanks, I guarantee it.

If there just running pilot excercises then they definetely went cheap. At Ft. Eustice i was in the group who test ran one of our new ways to do the ftx's. We used replica m-4 and AK paintball guns. it went horribly. All the guns jam right away, they only hold like 9 rounds, and they used compressed air which runs out in like 5 shots anyway. And the rifles just plain suck. It was a disaster. I actually suggested airsoft rifles to the major in charge of the test run and he said thats another route there looking into. Airsoft will be a big part of military training soon trust me, especially with the MILES system way out of date, and no new one expected to arise.

The only issue I truly see with airsoft training lacking of marking. Let's face it, even we don't ALWAYS know we're hit.

Miles has electronics that lets you know. Paintball and Simunitions leave residue. Airsoft has nothing.

However, it's certainly a step up from when trainees are just using blanks (like the article above suggests). I remember my brother telling me about an exercise they do where they essentially just go "bang bang bang bang!" at guys several yards away, and somehow the figure out who got hit. (it sounded pretty pathetic when it was being explained to me.) It sounded like the childrens game of cowboys and indians from the 50s.

For stuff like MOUT training though, I don't think Airsoft is the way to go. Too much stuff to keep track of in there and without a marking of some kind, I think it just ends up being too confusing for those involved.

Now, if they start implicating electronics (like that vest I found a while back), then I could see it paying off much more. But now we're getting into high cost equipment.

This is not anything new. Police departments have been using airsoft for years. A couple months ago a local high school let the county SERT team run a "Critical Incident Drill" and used nothing but airsoft because the school administration didn't want SIM round markings all over the place.

Airsoft has its place in the military, but it is that of a limited one. As Randy said, there is no way)right now) to tell if you are hit, and with all the kit soldiers today wear, feeling a couple BB's hit you may be impossible. Thats why SIM guns are always going to be the king of Force on Force training. It hurts when you get hit, and you learn quckly not to get hit again.

Law Enforcement on the other hand, that is a gold mine to any airsoft company that wants to specifically target them.

"No Kenny, guns don't go 'pew pew pew' they go 'BANG BANG BANG'"

They had something on the history channel once (or maybe it was the discovery channel, I dont remember) about police and military using airsoft as a training tool (which is how I got into airsoft). If I can find it I'll post it.

I don't see how this will become widely used because the military already has simunition. BB's might be cheaper but simunition is essentially a gun outfitted to use paintballs housed in shell casings. The guns operate exactly like the real ones and are powered exactly the same way as real ones. Airsoft guns only have 120-200ft range stock, so if they want to do longer engagements they need to spend alot of money to upgrade them, and even then it's still barely 250ft.

Right now airsoft has only cheap ammo over simunition if you don't include gas, batteries, chargers and replacement parts/upgrades.

Sorry, Sim Rounds are more expensive in every respect. And they don't have range past airsoft. They're only good for about 100 feet max. Airsoft goes past that even at 290FPS.

SimRounds are about $0.50 a round at last I heard, and you have to buy conversion equipment for each gun to be able to fire simrounds. You can't just load the rounds into your mag and go.

Each kit starts at around $200 and goes all the way up to 1k
http://srtestore.com/SIMUNITIONPRICELIST.pdf

Airsoft guns are just as cheap, if not cheaper, and require no upgrading to outrange a simround setup.

But again, I see these more replacing the times when soldiers are using blanks or pointing their gun and yelling "BANG!"

In this months issue of tactical milsim "mad max" wrote a good article about airsoft vs simunition. Apparently, simunition has many detractors.
